meterThe City of Longmont conducts an annual maintenance program to replace water meters on a scheduled cycle to ensure measuring accuracy. This ensures that each water customer receives an accurate bill and pays the appropriate amount for water consumption. Scheduled meter replacements are typically installed at no cost to the property owner (restrictions may apply).

Outdoor Meter Replacement

If the water meter is located in a pit outside of the home, a City employee or contractor will knock on the door before beginning work to let the resident know who they are and why they are working on their property. If the resident is not home, the technician will proceed with work in the pit.

Indoor Meter Replacement

If the water meter is located inside the home, the resident will receive a notification letter by mail requesting that an access appointment be scheduled with Water Utilities. It is important that this appointment be scheduled in a timely manner to avoid any disruption of water service.

Tip: through the meter maintenance program, single-family home and multi-family duplex owners have the option to move a meter that is located inside their home to an outside pit for a reduced fee. Learn more by calling Water Utilities for process and cost information.

In All Cases - Provide Easy Meter Access

It is the responsibility of the resident occupying the property to maintain a clear line of access to the water meter at all times. This means that the area around the water meter provides sufficient space for a person to place his body squarely before it, in close proximity, with room to operate tools and clearly view the water meter. If the resident doesn’t remove the obstruction, the City shall perform the work subject to reimbursement of cost plus a twenty-five percent surcharge.

Outdoors – the resident must remove any landscaping or materials blocking the water meter. This can include but isn’t limited to bushes, flowers, trees, fences, sod, yard edging, concrete or cement blocks. The resident must also ensure the water meter is at finished ground level. The resident will not have to allow the City access to the inside of their house.

Indoors – if the meter is in a finished basement or on the side of a house it is required that appropriate access to the meter exists. This includes access to all the valves, unions, and meter in order to remove the meter, catch water, and install new meter. When an appointment is scheduled to replace a water meter, the occupying resident must make sure there is access to the meter before their scheduled appointment.

If you are experiencing problems with your water meter or do not know where your meter is located, please contact Water Utilities Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm. For after hours emergencies involving a water meter, please call Longmont Police Dispatch.
