Third Avenue Striping Changes
Martin Street to Ken Pratt Boulevard
Project Update 

All chip seal work has been completed on Third Avenue from Martin Street to Ken Pratt Boulevard. The striping for this segment has been redesigned, and when completed, will extend on-street bike lanes from Martin Street all the way to Ken Pratt Boulevard.

 

Overview

The chip seal work on the segment of Third Avenue between Martin Street and Ken Pratt Boulevard has been completed. The next phase of this project includes striping changes that will improve multimodal transportation access as well as vehicular, bicyclist and pedestrian safety.

 

Goals and Planned Improvement

The goal of this project is to improve multimodal transportation access as well as vehicular, bicyclist and pedestrian safety. The most functional and visual changes to residents and travelers along Third Avenue will be:

  • Installing a bicycle lane in each direction to provide a safer place for people on bicycles, as well as creating a buffer between the automobile traffic and the pedestrians on the sidewalks.

 

Planned Improvement by Area
Preventative maintenance treatment – Martin Street to Ken Pratt Boulevard

As part of the City of Longmont’s annual Pavement Management Program, Third Ave. from Martin Street to Ken Pratt Boulevard has been selected to receive a preventative maintenance treatment called a chip seal. This program is funded by the City’s voter-approved, 3/4-cent Street Fund sales and use tax to help maintain Longmont’s streets for a safe and efficient transportation system. The chip seal application will be performed by contractors working for the City under the supervision of a City inspection team.

 

Chip Sealing Schedule:

Preparatory Work, Crack Sealing – Complete
First, the road is prepared for chip seal by filling and sealing any cracks using an asphalt-based tar material. Crack sealing typically occurs a couple of months in advance of the actual chip seal application. Additional information is provided on the back of this letter to describe what to expect during crack sealing operations.

 

Chip Seal, Phase 1 – Complete
Once chip seal activities begin, streets will be swept to remove any vegetation and debris followed by the application of asphaltic material and placement of aggregate. This process does not require a full street closure but may result in temporary delays. All vehicles must be removed from the street during this work.

 

Chip Seal, Phase 2 – Complete
After the initial chip seal application has set, any loose chip material will be swept and an additional thin asphalt layer will be applied to finalize the treatment.

Striping Changes

Third Avenue – Martin Street to Alpine Street

  • Reduction of existing lane widths between 10.5 – 11 feet
  • Addition of 5-foot bike lanes with 2-foot buffer
  • High visibility green bike lane striping at intersections

 

Third Avenue – Alpine Street to Ken Pratt Boulevard

  • Addition of 5-foot bike lanes with 2-foot buffer
  • High visibility green bike lane striping at intersections
