Volunteering – Over 300 volunteers in more than 35 positions, serving thousands of people each month

History

The Longmont Senior Program was founded in 1972 with funds from Title III of the Federal Older American Act. Through City of Longmont and federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds, a Senior Center was built in 1976. Initial programs included cards, dances, and potlucks. As participation increased, more and more diverse programs were offered. The Center progressed to a multi-purpose Senior Center when supportive services such as outreach, information, referral, daily meals, and counseling were added to an expanded recreation program.

 

As the population of seniors increased, so did the need for more space. Expansions of the original facility were completed in 1980, 1987, a major renovation and expansion in 2001, and lastly in 2013 when an expansion of the commercial kitchen space was completed. This added space was paid entirely by Longmont Meals on Wheels in exchange for a 20 year lease.

 

The Senior Center is owned, funded, and operated by the City of Longmont. Funds to support the center and the Division of Senior Services are from the City of Longmont.

 

Additional funding is provided by the Friends of the Longmont Senior Center, Inc. This 501(c)3 organization was created in 1981 and raises and receives funds that are used to enhance programs, services and the facility. Over the last 30+ years the Friends have donated well over $1 Million to the Senior Center for programs and supportive services.

 

Serious strategic planning began in 2006 with the county wide Creating Vibrant Communities in which All Age Well. This was updated in 2010 and 2014 as the Age Well Boulder County plan. In 2016, Longmont City Council approved the Envision Longmont Aging Well Plan and priorities. Future updates initiated in 2018 were interrupted by the COVID pandemic with planning resuming in 2022.
