Why Fiber Shines

Longmont knows how great fiber-optic internet is. It’s why our residents voted to build some in 2011. It’s attracted businesses, delighted gamers, and even Blue fiber optic strands forming a heart in the middleempowered people to work from home like never before.

So maybe it’s no surprise that the rest of the country is catching on.

You see, the latest American Customer Satisfaction Index just came out, one of the annual measures of how we all feel about the industries we do business with every day. Internet service providers usually rank pretty low on the list, and they sank near the bottom this year … with one exception.

Fiber-optic providers.

On a 100-point scale, fiber ISPs scored nine points higher than the rest of the industry. And that’s not a one-off. When PC Magazine did its Readers’ Choice Best ISP rankings in May, four of the top five ISPs overall were fiber providers, including our own NextLight, which (thanks to our awesome community)  topped the list as the best ISP in the nation.

So what makes fiber so great, anyway? There are a few simple answers:

  • Speed – For rock-your-socks off internet speed, nothing beats fiber. Most of our own customers have enjoyed gigabit speeds for years and we presently offer up to 10 gigs for those who want or need that extra kick.
  • Symmetry – The internet used to be all about download speed, but in an age of interactive video and remote work, uploads have become every bit as important. Fiber offers matching upload and download speeds, recognizing the need for speed in everything you do.
  • Stability – Fibers aren’t just fast, they’re able to handle large amounts of data and large numbers of users with ease, meaning that you don’t see the frequent video interruptions or game-play hiccups that another connection might inflict.

In fact, for most people, the only real drawback of fiber-optic internet is finding a provider since much of the country is only just now building out fiber service. That’s not an issue for Longmont, of course, where residents and businesses alike can simply contact NextLight.

Like we said, Longmont knows how great fiber-optic internet is.
