Art in Public Places
The Art In Public Places (AIPP) program in Longmont was established in 1989 and continues to expand the permanent collection in civic spaces and neighborhood parks, both old and new. Longmont’s public artwork collection is diverse in media and interpretation. Some artworks are closely tied to the history of Longmont, while others are purely whimsical. The goal is that each piece initiates thought and conversation by those who view it.
Mission statement: “To provide and manage a diverse collection of public art, and to promote art through education and outreach.” (as adopted May 2012)
Opportunities for Community Involvement
The Art in Public Places Commission is comprised of an active group of volunteers who approve sites for public artwork, recruit volunteers to participate on Selection Panels, send out calls to artists locally, regionally and nationally and work with the AIPP Administrator through the entire process of selection to installation of public artwork.

The Art in Public Places Commission often seeks community members to volunteer to assist in the selection of public artwork. Typically, this opportunity would require committing to 1-4 evenings over a three month period. No special criteria are required; however, we encourage community members who are willing to express and discuss their opinions about artwork and are familiar with at least some of the artwork in Longmont’s public art collection to apply.
Must be a Longmont resident to qualify.

Shock Art is an Art in Public Places program that relies on the opinions of the public as well as the creativity of local artists to enhance the “otherwise blah” green switchgear boxes around the City!
Shock Art 2025 submissions will open in the spring of 2025.

If you are an artist and would like to be added to the mailing list for notification of call to artists, email the AIPP administrator.
*Note – the program has updated the qualification requirements to encourage a diverse artwork selection. Artists commissioned as part of Shock Art will have to wait until the following year to submit a new work. Example – artists commissioned to paint in 2024 will sit-out 2025 and may submit a new design in 2026.
