Building Energy Benchmarking
Saving expenses matters – and with the business benchmarking program from Longmont Power & Communications (LPC), you can drive your company’s utility costs down by improving your energy efficiency. We’ll help you add up your building’s energy score, giving you the information you need to find new opportunities to save money and energy.
What is Benchmarking?
Building energy benchmarking lets you compare your building to similar building types in similar climates, so that you can see whether its energy use is above average, below average or on par. To do this, a participant inputs basic building data and 12 months of electric and natural gas usage information into the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager to calculate a score, and submits the results to LPC.
Who Can Benchmark?
The program is currently open on a voluntary basis to LPC commercial and industrial customers with buildings of 20,000 square feet and larger.
Why Should I Do This?
Building energy benchmarking can have a number of benefits, including:
- The ability to see opportunities for greater energy efficiency and prioritize those improvements.
- A better net operating income by acting on those opportunities. Nationwide, businesses that benchmark see an average savings of 2.4% on their annual energy costs.
- A property that is more attractive to tenants and more comfortable for employees.
How Do I Get Started?
The basic steps for benchmarking your building are laid out in our How-To Guide (pdf). After completing all the steps, you can share your utility data with LPC at any time by using our secure benchmarking portal.
How Do I Learn More About Reporting My Data?
Online training in Portfolio Manager is available: we recommend taking Portfolio Manager 101 and 201.
