In 2001, the Boulder County Latino Task Force (LTF) conducted an assessment of the Latino community in the county. Its purpose was to “identify and understand the values and contributions made by the Latino community that have improved the quality of life for all residents of Boulder County and to identify what is needed to improve the quality of life for Latino residents in Boulder County.”

After LTF’s findings were presented to each of the county’s municipal governments, the City of Longmont developed a strategic plan to help make Longmont a multicultural, caring and inclusive community. The Longmont City Council and more than 100 community members worked together to create a vision for establishing and sustaining connections within the Latino community and the City’s other cultures and cultural groups. The result was the formation of the Longmont Multicultural Action Committee (LMAC), formed to tackle objectives in a number of critical areas – education health, housing, culture, and community involvement.

In 2003, the Longmont City Council established the Community Unity Award in memory of Woody Palasek, the first co-chair of the LMAC steering committee. The award, given each year from 2003-2016, honored community leaders who work to ensure that Longmont remains a caring, inclusive community that embraces, respects, and celebrates its diversity.

Today, with an updated strategic plan, LMAC focuses on three main topic areas – Explore, Learn, Lead – that create engaging opportunities for residents to learn about and celebrate the many different cultures represented in our community. LMAC’s important work helps cultivate stronger connections that bridge relationships between community members from diverse cultures.
